This Month's Wellness Focus
October 2023 Wellness Focus
Injury Prevention

Welcome to this month's wellness focus – Injury prevention.

Whether you work on your feet, in the cab of a machine, or at a computer there are simple things you can do to prevent injury. We seek to educate and enable our people to ensure that they don’t suffer a totally preventable Injury. We have some great information below to help prevent any injuries.

The month of October is National Safe Work Month, with the theme ‘For everyone’s safety, work safely’ – encouraging everyone to make health and safety in the workplace a priority. We will be focussing on a new health and safety area each week, which includes Injuries at work, mental health, managing WHS risk and preventing harm, and safe and healthy work for all.

Monday 10th October is recognised as World Mental Health Day. We can all play our part in increasing awareness about which preventive mental health interventions work and World Mental Health Day is an opportunity to do that collectively. It is important for all of us to keep the ‘R U OK?’ conversation going and to let those around us know that we’re here to really hear.

On our Mental health page, we have great resources to help refresh your understanding of mental health and how you can tune in. Later this month we also have mental health professional, Ejaz visiting on site to conduct face to face check in sessions.

The project continues to run free bootcamp sessions at Gym 707 on Darling Street from 5:30pm-6:15pm.

National Safe Work Month

This October we will focus on a different health and safety area for each week of National Safe Work Month.

Week 1working together to manage risks at work

Regular WHS risk assessments will help prevent injuries or fatalities at your workplace.
In week 1 of National Safe Work Month we review the complete risk assessment process, from identification and assessment of hazards to the selection, implementation and review of control measures.

Week 2Working together to protect workers’ mental health

Protecting workers’ mental (psychological) health is just as important as protecting their physical health.
In week 2 of National Safe Work Month, learn how to identify psychosocial hazards and manage the associated risks to protects workers, and organise something at work to acknowledge World Mental Health Day on 10 October.

Week 3Working together to support all workers

All workers have the right to be safe at work.
Factors known to affect workers’ WHS vulnerability include being younger, working alone, being from a culturally and linguistically diverse background or working in a more complex contractual chain (e.g. labour hire).
In week 3 of National Safe Work Month, learn what PCBUs must do to manage risks to the health and safety of vulnerable workers.

Week 4 - Working together to ensure a safe and healthy workplace

Workers continue to be injured or made unwell by work. Let's keep workers safe and healthy by ensuring WHS is core to how we do business in Australia.
During the final week of National Safe Work Month, learn about the future of work health and safety, including changing patterns and ways of working as well as the emergence of new forms of work.

World Mental Health Day

This month, on the 10th of October, it is world mental health day. We have some great resources on the Mental Health page that you can go and check out.
Looking after your mental health and wellbeing, and knowing how to support others, has never been more important. Everyone has mental health, and we can all benefit from looking after our own mental health and the mental health of our communities. To make sure that we are supporting your mental health and wellbeing we have trained mental health first aiders (MHFAs). To date the Project has trained 100 people. You will see around the Project some of the orange hi-vis uniforms which are designed with a colourful patch on the collar and the hem of the shirts – these shirts signify that they are a trained Mental Health First Aider. A MHFA can also offer advice on where you can find further help if need be. You can check out this link to see who an on-site MHFA is.

Self-Assessment and Stretching Programs

Importance of stretching - The pre-start stretching program is about more than just a warmup, it is the first line of defence against early body stress and muscular injuries. Use the stretches as a method of assessing how your body is feeling and if overtime you feel changes to your base line level "Body Natural". Identify these changes early and report them to your supervisor.
