Opportunities for Improvement

What worked this year?
  • Improving performance of office waste management and reporting: engaging with Grasshopper to improve office waste diversion, providing a recycling quiz, Return and Earn scheme and internal reporting was restructured to include grasshopper data along with commercial waste tracking.
  • Cost benefit analysis for lessons learnt implemented in all knowledge shares.
  • Implementation of high value initiatives: Glass sand flowable fill trial (April 2021)
  • Quarterly reporting streamlined: Data registers have been streamlined and contact lists have been developed.
  • Social targets: Part time flexible work program for workers with children, women in construction committee and ‘High Potential’ coaching program to upskill employees.
  • Undertake additional knowledge share to key stakeholders on the Project’s innovations and community engagement.
What didn't work this year?
  • Cost benefit analysis of timed air-conditioning at M5 offices showed significant resources required to implement, instead implemented timed water saving taps.
  • Soft plastic recycling trial has been challenging to implement, as the industry is currently saturated with supply and lacking recycling facilities recycling .
  • The solar panel proposal for the motorway operation centre was not taken up by the client.
Opportunities for improvement for 2022-2023
  • Continue to investigate soft plastic recycling options.
  • Identify further opportunities to use bespoke low carbon concrete.
  • Finalise a system for calculating total material spend on the Project
  • Continue to identify opportunities to increase office waste diversion percentages.
  • Submit Dis-1 Credit Interpretation Request (CIR) to ISC for consideration and
  • Update water, materials, waste and energy forecasts.
  • Purchase energy offset credits in line with SWTC requirements (6%).
  • Propose increasing the volume of biodiesel to TfNSW.
  • Lock in strategy to achieve innovation credits
  • Continue to use the Multi-Criteria Analysis  tool to capture significant decision making on the Project for Man-7.
  • Consider ways to optimise Return and Earn bin performance.
  • Propose 100% GreenPower to TfNSW for consideration.
  • Implement biodiesel transition.
  • Switch M5 offices to Grasshopper Environmental to improve office waste diversion.
  • Continue geopolymer trials.
  • Conduct an internal bin audit of all sites and implement recommendations where warranted.
